Effects and transitions
Add effects to clips, use adjustment clips, and put transitions (cuts) between clips in Zornov.
Effects change how a clip looks: blur it, make it glow, give it an old-film feel. Transitions, which Zornov calls cuts, change how one clip gives way to the next.
Add an effect to a clip
- Select one or more picture clips on the timeline.
- In the Library, open Effects.
- Click an effect to apply it to the selected clips.
Or drag an effect from the Library onto a clip on the timeline. The clip is outlined while you hover, and the effect goes on when you let go.
A clip with effects shows a small wand icon before its name on the timeline.
The effect groups
| Group | Examples |
|---|---|
| Blur | Gaussian blur, Directional blur, Zoom blur, Lens blur, Tilt-shift, Background blur fill |
| Light | Drop shadow, Rim light, Glow, Bloom, Light leak, Lens flare, God rays, Neon edges |
| Stylise | Posterise, Halftone, Comic ink, Oil paint, Sketch, Pixelate, Kaleidoscope, Mirror |
| Distort | Wave, Ripple, Twirl, Bulge / pinch, Fisheye / defish, Glass, Living water, Camera shake |
| Retro | VHS, Old film, CRT screen, 8-bit dither, Chromatic aberration, RGB split, Glitch |
| Time | Echo, Strobe, Frame blend, Posterise time |
| Keying | Chroma key, Luma key, Difference key |
| Plugins | Effects from plugins you have installed |
Type in the Library's search field to find an effect by name. The keying effects are covered in Compositing.
Adjust or remove an effect
Select the clip and open the Adjust tab in the Inspector. The Effects section lists the clip's effects, each with its settings below it.
- Drag a setting, or type a value, to change it.
- Use the switch beside an effect to turn it off and on without losing its settings.
- Click the × beside an effect (Remove effect) to take it off.
- Click Add effect to open the Library's Effects.
Use an adjustment clip
An adjustment clip carries an effect or a look over a stretch of time, and changes everything on the lanes below it. Use one when several clips should get the same treatment, or for a short hit over a cut.
- Drag an effect (or a look) from the Library onto an empty part of a picture lane, above the clips it should change.
- Let go. Zornov adds an adjustment clip that lines up with the main-lane clip under that point (or lasts 4 seconds where there is none).
Adjustment clips show with diagonal stripes and the name of their effect. Trim and move them like any clip, and set their effect in the Inspector's Adjust tab.
Add a transition
Transitions go between two clips that touch on the Main lane.
- Select the clip before the cut.
- In the Library, open Cuts.
- Click a cut to put it between that clip and the next.
You can also drag a cut onto the clip before the cut. On the timeline a transition shows as a bow-tie shape over the cut. Hover over it to see its name and length.
A new transition lasts half a second, or less when there isn't enough spare footage beyond the clips' ends. If a clip uses all of its footage, Zornov trims a quarter of a second off each side of the cut to make room.
The cut groups
| Group | Cuts |
|---|---|
| Basic | Dissolve, Dip to colour, Wipe, Clock wipe, Iris, Luma fade, Shape reveal |
| Motion | Slide, Push, Cover, Reveal, Zoom through, Spin, Flip, Cube, Page curl, Whip pan |
| Light | Blur dissolve, Glitch cut, Light flash |
| Plugins | Transitions from plugins you have installed |
Change or remove a transition
Click the bow-tie shape to select the transition. The Inspector shows its Cut section:
- Style swaps it for another kind.
- Duration sets how long it lasts, in seconds. Longer cuts need more footage beyond the clips' edges, so the longest you can set depends on your clips.
- Remove cut takes it out.
You can also select it and press Backspace or Delete.
Entry motions
To make a clip slide, pop or fade in rather than appear, apply a motion from the Library's Motions section. See Titles and text; motions work on any picture clip, not only titles.
Colour looks
Looks (ready-made colour treatments) work like effects: click one in the Library's Looks section to apply it to the selected clips, or drag it onto a lane for an adjustment clip. See Colour.
