Update and uninstall

How Zornov updates itself, how to update a Homebrew or .deb install, how to uninstall it, and where your projects and settings are kept.

Zornov keeps itself up to date.

How updates work

Zornov checks for a new version in the background, at most once a day. When one is ready, a notice appears in the bottom-right corner of the window:

  1. "Zornov 0.x.y is available" shows the first line of what's new. Click Update now to download it, or Later to be reminded another day.
  2. The notice shows the download's progress. You can keep working.
  3. "Zornov 0.x.y is ready" means the update is downloaded. Click Restart now to install it straight away, or carry on: it installs the next time Zornov starts.

Restart now saves your open project first, then installs the update and opens the new version.

On Windows, an installer (MSI) install updates by running the new installer after Zornov quits, then opens Zornov again. Windows may ask you to allow the installer to make changes.

Check for updates yourself

Choose Help > Check for updates…. Zornov tells you if you already have the latest version.

You can also go to Settings > About. The Updates section shows your version, when Zornov last checked, and what's new in an available update. It has a Check for updates button and a Check automatically switch; turn the switch off if you don't want Zornov to look for updates by itself.

Installs that can't update themselves

Some copies of Zornov can't replace their own files. They still tell you when a new version is out, with the message "This copy cannot update itself", and a Download page button that opens the latest release.

  • The Linux .deb package. Download the new .deb and install it the same way you installed the first one:

    sudo apt install ./zornov_0.1.2_amd64.deb

  • A copy run from the Mac disk image. Drag Zornov into your Applications folder and open it from there.

  • A portable folder or AppImage you can't write to. Move the folder (Windows and Linux) or the AppImage (Linux) somewhere you own, such as your home folder.

If an update fails, the notice says "The update did not work" and why. Your current version is left as it was. Click Try again.

Update a Homebrew install

Zornov updates itself even when you installed it with Homebrew. To have Homebrew fetch the latest version instead, run:

brew upgrade --cask --greedy zornov

Homebrew skips apps that update themselves unless you add --greedy.

Uninstall Zornov

Uninstalling removes the app. It leaves your projects and Zornov's settings where they are; see Where Zornov keeps things to remove those too.

Mac

Quit Zornov, then drag Zornov from your Applications folder to the Bin.

If you installed with Homebrew, run:

brew uninstall --cask zornov

To also remove Zornov's settings, caches and saved window state, use brew uninstall --zap --cask zornov. This doesn't touch your projects.

Windows

  • Installer (MSI): open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (on Windows 10, Apps & features), find Zornov, and choose Uninstall.
  • Portable zip: quit Zornov and delete the folder you extracted.

Linux

  • .deb package: run sudo apt remove zornov.
  • AppImage: delete the AppImage file.
  • Portable archive: delete the extracted zornov-linux-x86_64 folder.

Where Zornov keeps things

Your projects

Every project is a folder. New projects go in a Studio/Projects folder with your videos:

SystemProjects folder
Mac~/Movies/Studio/Projects
Windows%USERPROFILE%\Videos\Studio\Projects
Linux~/Videos/Studio/Projects

A project you saved somewhere else with File > Save as… stays where you saved it. Each project folder has a backups folder with its 20 most recent autosave backups. Your media is never copied into a project: it stays where it was when you imported it.

The same Studio folder also holds:

  • Models: the AI models you download from Settings > Models
  • Made: the models, moves, designs and sounds you keep
  • AI: what the AI editor has learned (you can read, edit and delete it in Settings > AI)
  • Workspaces.json: the layouts you saved with Save layout as…

Settings and app data

App data: downloaded updates, crash reports, the content library~/Library/Application Support/Zornov%LOCALAPPDATA%\Zornov~/.local/state/zornov

On Linux, the XDG_DATA_HOME, XDG_STATE_HOME, XDG_CACHE_HOME and XDG_VIDEOS_DIR settings move these folders if you have set them.

To clear the caches from inside Zornov, go to Settings > Storage and click Clean up cache. It removes cached frames, waveforms and proxies, and doesn't touch projects or media.
