Import and export formats
The video, audio, picture, 3D, subtitle, script and timeline formats Zornov can bring in and write out.
This page lists the file formats Zornov reads and writes. To bring media in, use File > Import media… (⌘ I on Mac, Ctrl I on Windows and Linux). To make a video, use File > Export… (⌘ E on Mac, Ctrl E on Windows and Linux).
Import
Video
| Format | Notes |
|---|---|
| MP4, MOV, M4V with H.264 or HEVC video | Plays as it is |
| Apple ProRes in MOV | Plays as it is |
| VP9 or AV1 video in MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV | Converted to H.264 when you import it (see below) |
When a file needs converting, Zornov writes an H.264 MP4 copy next to the original, named name (Zornov).mp4, and uses that. Your original isn't changed. File > Import media… lists MP4, MOV and M4V files; WebM and MKV files come in through the command line (zornov import) or an AI assistant.
Audio
| Format | Notes |
|---|---|
| WAV, AIFF | |
| MP3 | |
| M4A (AAC) | Also the AAC sound in MP4 and MOV video |
| FLAC | |
| Ogg Vorbis |
Pictures
| Format | Notes |
|---|---|
| PNG, JPEG | |
| TIFF, 16-bit PNG, OpenEXR, DPX | |
| Photoshop (PSD, PSB) | Comes in as one flattened picture. An AI assistant can bring each layer in as its own clip |
File > Import media… lists PNG and JPEG pictures; TIFF, OpenEXR and DPX files come in through the command line (zornov import) or an AI assistant.
The Paint screen opens a wider range of pictures for painting and retouching: PSD, PSB, TIFF, PNG, JPEG, WebP, HEIC, EXR, GIF, BMP, TGA, OpenRaster, Krita, GIMP, Paint.NET, SVG and camera raw files among them.
Motion graphics
| Format | Notes |
|---|---|
Lottie (.json, .lottie) | Plays with its transparency |
3D models
| Format | Notes |
|---|---|
glTF (.glb, .gltf) | |
| OBJ | |
| STL |
A 3D model comes in as a model on the timeline, not as an item in the media bin.
Vector art
The Vector art editor imports SVG (and compressed SVGZ), PDF, EPS and Adobe Illustrator files, and places other pictures on an artboard so you can trace them.
Subtitles
The Sound panel imports subtitles as SubRip (.srt) or WebVTT (.vtt).
Scripts
File > Import script… reads Fountain, plain text, Markdown, Word (.docx), SubRip and WebVTT.
Timelines from other editors
| Format | How |
|---|---|
OpenTimelineIO (.otio) | File > Import timeline… |
Final Cut Pro XML (.fcpxml, .xml) | File > Import timeline… |
EDL (.edl) | Through the command line or an AI assistant (conform) |
AAF isn't supported. Export an EDL, FCPXML or OTIO from the other application instead.
Export
File > Export… offers presets for the common cases and a Format menu with every format.

Other exports
| What | Format | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Sound stems | WAV files: dialogue, music, effects, music and effects, and the full mix | Export stems… in the Sound panel |
| Subtitles | SubRip (.srt) or WebVTT (.vtt) | Export… beside a subtitle track in the Sound panel |
| Script | Fountain, plain text or SubRip | Export in the Library's Story section |
| Timeline | OpenTimelineIO | File > Export OpenTimelineIO… |
| Timeline | EDL or FCPXML | Through the command line or an AI assistant (conform) |
| 3D model | glTF binary (.glb) or OBJ | Export… in the Model section of the Inspector, with the model selected |
| Pictures | PSD, PSB, TIFF, PNG, JPEG, WebP, EXR, GIF, BMP, TGA | Export… on the Paint screen |
| Vector art | SVG, PDF, EPS, PNG | Export buttons in the Vector art editor |
| Lottie animation | .json or .lottie | zornov export intro.lottie, or ask an AI assistant |
| Platform deliveries | YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, broadcast, cinema DCP, IMF and more | Through the command line or an AI assistant (deliver) |
A Lottie export keeps pictures, titles, shapes and their animation. Video, sound, effects, grades, masks, transitions and 3D can't be held in Lottie, so they're left out and listed in the export's report.
Projects
A Zornov project is a folder. It holds the project file (project.json) and the things made for the project. To move a project, move the whole folder.
