Titles and text

Add titles, lower thirds and other words to your film in Zornov, style them, place them and animate them.

Titles in Zornov are clips like any other: they sit on a lane, have a start and a length, and can be trimmed, moved and animated.

Add a title

  1. Move the playhead to where the title should start.
  2. In the Library, open Text. The styles are grouped: Clean, Bold, Outline, Neon, Retro, Playful, Elegant, Cinematic, Social and Handmade.
  3. Click a style to add it at the playhead, or drag it to the place you want on the timeline.

The title goes on the Titles lane for 4 seconds, with sample words in that style. Trim or move it like any clip; see Clips and trimming.

Change the words

Double-click the title in the player. A text cursor opens right where you clicked. Type your words, then press Return (Enter) or click outside the text to keep them. Press Esc to put the old words back.

You can also select the title and type in the Type your title field at the top of the Inspector's Text section.

Style the text

Select the title and open the Text tab in the Inspector. The Text section has:

SettingDoes
ColourThe colour of the letters
SizeThe size in points, from 5 to 300
Letter spacingSpace between the letters
Left, Centre, RightHow the lines line up
FontThe typeface. Style default keeps the one the style came with
WeightFrom thin (100) to heavy (900)
ItalicSlanted letters
CaseShow the words as typed, or in upper, lower or title case
Line spacingSpace between lines
OutlineA line around the letters, with its own colour and width
ShadowA shadow, with its colour, opacity, blur, distance and angle

Use the section's reset button to go back to the style's own settings. If several titles are selected, a change applies to all of them.

Place the title

Drag the title in the player to move it. Drag its handles to scale or turn it.

For exact numbers, use the Transform section in the same tab: Position X, Position Y, Scale, Rotation, Opacity and Blend.

To keep titles away from the edges of the screen, click Overlays in the player's toolbar and turn on Safe areas. Keep words inside the inner box, and in vertical video keep them away from the bottom, where the platform's buttons sit.

When a title should sit behind something in the picture, use Send backward or Send to back in its right-click menu.

Animate a title

Entry motions

  1. Select the title.
  2. In the Library, open Motions. The In and out group holds motions that bring a clip in; Loop holds motions that repeat.
  3. Click a motion to apply it to the selected clips.

To change or remove it, open the Inspector's Animation tab. In the Motion section, pick another Entry (or None) and set its Duration.

Letters that move

The Text animation section in the Text tab moves the letters themselves. Click a preset to add it:

  • highlight sweep, wave jump, focus in, tracking in, jitter, float, drop out

Click Remove animators to take them off. On a path sets the letters along an Arc, a Circle or a Wave (None straightens them again), and Kerning turns the font's letter-pair spacing on or off.

Keyframes

Every setting with a diamond beside it in the Transform section can be animated:

  1. Move the playhead to where the change starts and click the diamond to add a keyframe.
  2. Move the playhead on, and change the value. Zornov adds a second keyframe.

Keyframes show as small marks along the bottom of the clip on the timeline. Click one to jump to it, drag it to change its timing, or right-click it to choose how it eases into the next one (for example Ease in and out, Linear, Overshoot, Bounce or Hold) or to delete it. Press Shift G to see the animation as curves in the graph editor.

Lower thirds, templates and charts

Designed pieces with fields to fill in are in the player's toolbar. Click the Motion graphics button (shapes icon) to open the menu. You can search it, or browse:

  • Lower thirds, Titles, Callouts, Social, Transitions, Infographics, Charts and End cards
  • Shape layer: ready-made animated shapes
  • Chart from data: Bar chart, Line chart, Donut chart, Pie chart and Route map
  • 3D: 3D text, which makes extruded letters lit by the scene. It uses the words of the selected title.

Each one is added at the playhead. Select it and fill in its fields (names, roles, colours, numbers, the chart's data) in the Template section of the Inspector. You can also double-click a template's text in the player to edit it in place, the same way as a title.

Captions

Words that follow what is said are better made as captions or subtitles. See Captions and subtitles.
